Mary McCormick Notes

Mary McCormick is a leader, educator, political activist, dedicated tribal member, wife, and mother. She is known throughout the state; mention of her name evokes an, “I know her” response from many. A twenty-two year member of the Oklahoma Historical Society, she has donated her papers to the Society, and they are now available to researchers. (more…)

Cherokee Nation Plat Maps

Beginning in late December and through January of 2009, our Cherokee Nation township plat maps underwent the process of oversized document digitization. There are a total of 236 township maps that include townships 9 north through 29 north. An interesting characteristic of these maps is the meticulous detail with which the ownership of allotments is shown. Each map contains the names, statuses, and allotment numbers of the individual owners. (more…)

The House of Mato Nonpa

In 1920, the Oklahoma Historical Society received as a gift from Will Clark, a buffalo hide tipi decorated with pictographs. For the next 80 years, this tipi was the focal point for museum patrons. The tipi underwent several conservation treatments to repair damage or for cleaning. (more…)
