U.S. Cavalry Association Awarded Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society is proud to announce that the U.S. Cavalry Association has been awarded a grant through the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program.
"Congratulations to the U.S. Cavalry Association on being awarded the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant," said Sen. Lonnie Patxon, Tuttle. "Digitizing historic records and making them publicly accessible online is vital for saving and sharing our history for future generations"
"I’m so pleased to learn the U.S. Cavalry Association will receive this grant to help with its website design as a way to preserve and promote its collections and publications," said Rep. Rhonda Baker, Yukon. "The Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program allows so many worthy organizations to participate in projects that might otherwise slip from public view. I’m grateful the public will now have access to these important pieces of history."
The U.S. Cavalry Association has been awarded $11,000 that will fund the creation of a website to allow for the adequate hosting of the association's publications, collections and e-commerce. The project will allow the association to digitize and place online 35 oral history transcriptions, 11 collection finding aides, 17 manuscript documents, 17 years–worth of quarterly journals and 33 archival boxes of print photograph listings. Additionally, they will add 75 items to the e-commerce side of the site, which will allow for more revenue.
"The funds awarded to the U.S. Cavalry Association from the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program will allow us to continue working on the aim and purpose of the association," said President Bill Tempero, "which are preserving the history and traditions through the U.S. Cavalry Association's Museum and the U.S. Cavalry Memorial Research Library, which is used for educational purposes, and to preserve the literature used by the U.S. Cavalry throughout its history."
A total of just over $460,000 in grant funds will be distributed, with projects ranging from collections care and exhibit development to strategic planning and educational programming. "This is only the second year for this grant program. As organizations wrap up their grant projects from last year and as we see the quality of the applications that came in for this grant cycle, it is clear that there is a strong need for this type of grant program," said Nicole Harvey, OHS grants administrator.
The Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program is a grants-in-aid program offered by the Oklahoma Historical Society with a goal of encouraging the collection, preservation and sharing of Oklahoma history at the grassroots level in all parts of the state. Open to tribal and municipal governments and not-for-profit historical organizations located in Oklahoma and registered with the Oklahoma secretary of state, this grants program offers funding ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 for projects focused on collections, exhibits and programming.
