Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar Awarded Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society is proud to announce that the Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar has been awarded a grant through the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program.
"The Stillwater Museum at the Sheerar's grant award is a great example of how projects based in the community are having success with a public/private partnership and are able to provide a meaningful impact for an organization and the public," said Sen. Tom J. Dugger, Stillwater.
The Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar has been awarded $9,347 that will fund a project focused on assessing, rehousing and inputting data into a collections management software program for the museum's textile collection.
"The Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar is pleased to be the recipient of the Oklahoma Historical Society’s second round of funding for collections preservation and care," said Director Amelia Chamberlain. "The first grant provided us with the equipment to digitize two significant Stillwater collections: 20 years of minutes of the first chamber of commerce meetings beginning in 1913, and about 10 years of safety council documents from the 1940s. This second grant will help us gain control of our extensive textiles collection by providing a computer work station in the Textiles Room, collection supplies and funding for staff to accomplish the work."
A total of just over $460,000 in grant funds will be distributed, with projects ranging from collections care and exhibit development to strategic planning and educational programming. "This is only the second year for this grant program. As organizations wrap up their grant projects from last year and as we see the quality of the applications that came in for this grant cycle, it is clear that there is a strong need for this type of grant program," said Nicole Harvey, OHS grants administrator.
The Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program is a grants-in-aid program offered by the Oklahoma Historical Society with a goal of encouraging the collection, preservation and sharing of Oklahoma history at the grassroots level in all parts of the state. Open to tribal and municipal governments and not-for-profit historical organizations located in Oklahoma and registered with the Oklahoma secretary of state, this grants program offers funding ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 for projects focused on collections, exhibits and programming.
