Eastern Shawnee Tribe Of Oklahoma Awarded Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society is proud to announce that the Eastern Shawnee Tribe Of Oklahoma has been awarded a grant through the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program.
The Eastern Shawnee Tribe Of Oklahoma has been awarded $15,827 to fund a project that will connect photographs to the names found on the 1938 roll of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. Once the images have been identified and catalogued, an exhibit featuring the photographs will be displayed in the George J. Captain Library in Wyandotte.
"The OHS has awarded a 2021 Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant to the George J. Captain Library of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe," said Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. "The library currently houses a collection of more than 15,000 photographs. Over the span of the next 12 months, the staff will be utilizing library tribal museums, online searches and tribal citizens as community outreach on our journey to discover the faces of the names depicted on the 1938 base roll. A minimum of 5,000 photographs will be discovered and cataloged in a collection management software program to create a database of images to look through. We look forward to presenting our discoveries through our ˈFinding the Faces to the 1938 Base Rollˈ exhibit, to be displayed at the George J. Captain Library."
A total of just over $460,000 in grant funds will be distributed, with projects ranging from collections care and exhibit development to strategic planning and educational programming. "This is only the second year for this grant program. As organizations wrap up their grant projects from last year and as we see the quality of the applications that came in for this grant cycle, it is clear that there is a strong need for this type of grant program," said Nicole Harvey, OHS grants administrator.
The Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program is a grants-in-aid program offered by the Oklahoma Historical Society with a goal of encouraging the collection, preservation and sharing of Oklahoma history at the grassroots level in all parts of the state. Open to tribal and municipal governments and not-for-profit historical organizations located in Oklahoma and registered with the Oklahoma secretary of state, this grants program offers funding ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 for projects focused on collections, exhibits and programming.
