Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center Invites Public to Observe Excavations at Site

SPIRO, Okla. – The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center invites the public to observe excavations carried out at the site this spring by the University of Oklahoma (OU) and the Oklahoma Archeological Survey (OAS). Taking place from May 13 to June 14, this immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to witness the uncovering of ancient history.

While participation in the archaeological field school is only open to students under the direction of OU and OAS faculty and staff, the public is encouraged to come throughout the month, from Tuesday to Friday, between 9 a.m. and approximately 2:30 p.m., weather permitting, to witness the excavation process in action.

This unique opportunity provides a glimpse into the meticulous work of archaeologists as they uncover the secrets of Pre-European Contact sites. Visitors will have the chance to observe firsthand techniques used in excavation.

The field school is sponsored by the Oklahoma Archeological Survey, the OU Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences, and the College’s Department of Anthropology. Operating under a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and special authorization from the Caddo Nation and Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, this endeavor represents a commitment to preserving and understanding the cultural heritage of the region.

Excavations will be concentrated in areas of interest identified by previous studies. The goal is to shed light on the daily lives of ancient inhabitants, providing invaluable insights into the history and culture of Spiro.

Regular hours of operation for the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center are Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, please call 918-962-2062 or visit okhistory.org/spiromounds. The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is located at 18154 1st St. in Spiro. Admission to Spiro Mounds is currently free while the center is undergoing several updates.
