Frisco Railroad Depot in Clayton Listed in National Register of Historic Places
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) are pleased to announce the National Register of Historic Places designation for the following property in Oklahoma. The National Register of Historic Places is our nation’s official list of properties significant in our past.
Pushmataha County
Frisco Railroad Depot
NW corner, intersection of Pine St. and Depot St., Clayton
Constructed in 1913, the Frisco Railroad Depot facilitated the transportation of goods, services and people to and from Clayton and was integral to the economic development of Clayton. The construction of the depot reflects the continued expansion of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway into the Choctaw Nation. The significance of the property extended until 1958 when passenger rail service ended in Clayton.
Listing in the National Register of Historic Places is an honorific designation that provides recognition, limited protection and, in some cases, financial incentives for these important properties. The SHPO identifies, evaluates and nominates properties for this special designation.
The State Historic Preservation Office is a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society.
