Learn About Life as an 1850s Carpenter in Workshop at Hunter’s Home
PARK HILL, Okla. — A workshop on Saturday, September 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Hunter’s Home will teach people how someone would begin as a carpenter in the 1850s.
Hunter’s Home was originally built by skilled carpenters, both free and enslaved individuals. They built the house entirely by hand, and their work still stands 175 years later.
A carpenter’s skill was not developed overnight. They spent years learning their trade, usually by becoming apprentices to a more experienced carpenter.
The workshop is free, and no admission is required. It will cover basic use and maintenance of hand tools, how to properly “season” wood for a carpentry project and where to find more information on historic carpentry. Attendees will make an item to take home with them.
For more information, call 918-456-2751. Hunter’s Home is located at 19479 E. Murrell Home Rd. in Park Hill. It is Oklahoma’s only remaining pre-Civil War plantation home.
Hunter’s Home is a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society. The mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society is to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people.
