Friends of Fort Gibson Foundation Receives Grant From Oklahoma Humanities
FORT GIBSON, Okla. — The Friends of Fort Gibson Foundation is pleased to announce it has received a $1,500 grant from Oklahoma Humanities. The grant helped pay for the “Dawes Commission in Indian Territory: Cherokee Freedman” exhibit, which allowed the Fort Gibson Historic Site to provide resources and access to humanities in the community.
The Friends of Fort Gibson Foundation, in partnership with Oklahoma Historical Society, provided additional funds and staff to complete the project, which is open through the end of February. Because of this partnership, Fort Gibson Historic Site will be able to offer this exhibit annually.
The Friends of Fort Gibson Foundation is a support organization formed to support and promote the Fort Gibson Historic Site and its related interests for the purpose of historical preservation. Since its inception, it has established fundraising methods such as the site’s Museum Store, with all proceeds going directly to the preservation of the site’s history, educational programs that bring history to life, site exhibits, maintenance equipment and much more.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant,” said Jennifer Frazee, director of Fort Gibson Historic Site. “Grants like these help us share little-known history in engaging ways and allow us to make sure Oklahoma history is preserved for generations to come.”
The Fort Gibson Historic Site is located at 803 N. Garrison Ave. in Fort Gibson.
Funding for this program is provided in part by a grant from Oklahoma Humanities (OH) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of OH or NEH.
