Fort Gibson Historic Site Preparing for Annual Spring Bake Day
FORT GIBSON, Okla. — The smell of fresh-baked bread will once again permeate the Fort Gibson Historic Site. The annual Spring Bake Day will take place on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Staff will operate the oven all day, with fresh loaves of bread available around noon and 3:30 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to visit the newly renovated 1870s historic hospital, which includes a gift shop, gallery spaces and a replica hospital ward. The rest of the fort will also be open for self-guided tours. Regular admission fees apply unless visitors are only on-site to get bread and visit the gift shop. There is no cost to sample the bread, but donations are appreciated.
While attending Spring Bake Day, guests can also see living history demonstrations to learn what life was like at the historic military outpost for the Mounted Rangers in the 1930s. The re-enactors will discuss the weapons and equipment carried on assignments, how they cared for the weapons and equipment, travel arrangements, supplies, housing and more. This program is included with paid admission and will be held in the palisade area.
