Pioneer Woman Museum Opens New Exhibit
PONCA CITY, Okla. — On Saturday, April 22, the Pioneer Woman Museum will open its newest exhibit, “Pieces of a Collection: Selected Quilts of the Pioneer Woman Museum.”
"Pieces of a Collection" will highlight 12 historically significant quilts and several sewing implements from the museum’s permanent collection. Featured in the exhibit will be quilts with significant artistic merit, as evidenced by the hand and machine work of the quilt artist, and have ties to Ponca City and to the women and families of the area.
Also on exhibit will be historic sewing implements from the Pioneer Woman Museum — some interesting and some shocking. This is a not-to-be-missed exhibit for quilt artists, historians and those interested in the historical significance of these one-of-a-kind works of art.
“We are so incredibly excited to open this exhibit and share it with the public,” said Museum Director Robbin Davis. “We have been working on it for nearly a year and we want everyone to experience the thrill of seeing these truly one-of-a-kind pieces of art and history and enjoy them just as much as we have throughout the research and development of the exhibit,” continued Davis.
Several programs are planned to coincide with the exhibit. Elsie Campbell, a local quilt artist and instructor, will present “Care and Conservation of Heirloom Quilts” on Saturday, April 29, at 10:30 a.m. and will lead a workshop for beginning quilters on Saturday, May 6. The hands-on class will include instruction by Campbell on the Bachelor’s Bowties quilt block. Cost for the class is $50 plus the supplies and is payable at registration. Cost for the class includes lunch. A supply list will be given with registration.
On Saturday, June 24, Dr. Sara J. Richter, a professor at Panhandle State University and frequent guest lecturer at the museum, will give a free presentation entitled, “Pieces, Blocks, and Stitches: The Fabric of Our Lives,” beginning at 10 a.m. Richter’s lecture will incorporate quilts and quilting and how the art reflects the life of the artist.
“Additional programs are in the works,” said Director Davis. “We hope to announce more opportunities to learn and enjoy quilting as the exhibit continues through the summer and early fall.”
The exhibit will run April 22 through September 16, 2017, and can be viewed 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, with regular paid admission to the Pioneer Woman Museum. Group tour bookings are available for groups of 10 or more people and can be arranged by calling the museum. Discounted admission is available for large groups.
The Pioneer Woman Museum, a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society, is located at 701 Monument Road in Ponca City.
