Oklahoma Historical Society and University of Central Oklahoma Announce Fall Classes
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) Research Center and the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) Department of History and Geography are partnering to offer two fall courses.
“Preservation and Conservation” will meet in four Saturday sessions on Aug. 26 and Sept. 2, 9 and 16 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of preservation and conservation of significant works housed at cultural heritage institutions and in personal collections. Students will learn to assess and evaluate storage conditions, identify harmful environmental factors, perform basic preservation and reformatting procedures on paper-based items and multimedia materials, and respond and recover from disaster situations.
“Tracing Your Roots” will meet Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, 11 and 18 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. This course is designed to teach individuals the basics of genealogy. Topics include: how to begin your genealogical search, census and vital records, using newspapers for research, American Indian resources, beginning DNA, how to obtain free resources, and how to access materials located at the OHS. In addition, the class will offer a behind the scenes tour of the OHS Research Center.
Classes will meet in the Clark and Kay Musser Learning Lab at the Oklahoma History Center, located at 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City. Registration is $100 per class. Courses are open to the public and there are no prerequisites. Participants may register online at go.uco.edu/outreachcourses-link.
