Pilots Pay Tribute to Will Rogers and Wiley Post
OOLOGAH, Okla. — The Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch is pleased to host its annual Will Rogers and Wiley Post Fly-In on Saturday, Aug. 12. This event commemorates the 82nd anniversary of the deaths of Rogers and Post in a plane crash in Alaska on Aug. 15, 1935.
Gates to the ranch will open at 7:30 a.m. and planes will start landing at about 8:30. There is ample free parking. Spectators should bring a lawn chair to sit on the sidelines. Guests are free to walk among the planes for a close-up and personal look and to visit with pilots and hear them swap stories.
Planes land on the runway adjacent to the house where Will Rogers was born. Come to this family friendly event to see vintage aircraft, World War I fighters, experimentals, biplanes, helicopters and more.
There will also be an antique and classic car show and motorcycle show, Cherokee storyteller Robert Lewis, tours of the house where Rogers was born, music on the front porch of the house by Roper Gene Loyd, and games and crafts for children. The Will Rogers Memorial Museum store will have a booth, and there will be food vendors on site.
A special moment of remembrance will be observed at 10 a.m. with a live broadcast by RSU Radio 91.3 beginning at 9:55 a.m.
Admission is free, but donations are accepted. The Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch is located at 9501 East 380 Road in Oologah, Okla. It is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 918-341-0719.
