Oklahoma History Center Presents Mary Ann Jung Portraying Clara Barton, Red Cross Angel

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma History Center is privileged to present Mary Ann Jung, a Smithsonian scholar and award-winning actress, in a living history portrayal of Clara Barton. Barton is credited with founding the American Red Cross in 1881, as well as becoming the first woman to work for the federal government, the first female federal department head and America’s first female ambassador. Two public performances will be offered. The first will be on Wednesday, March 6, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. The second performance will be a matinee on Thursday, March 7, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., with doors opening at 1:30 p.m. These performances will take place in the Event Center with no reserved seating. Admission costs are $10 for Oklahoma Historical Society members and $20 for nonmembers. Tickets may be purchased by calling 405-522-0765. The Oklahoma History Center is located at 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City.

After graduating with a degree in British history from University of Maryland in 1982, Jung wanted to find a way to share her love of history while exploring her passion for theater. To this end, she formed a one-woman acting company, History Alive! In addition to Clara Barton, Jung also portrays Queen Elizabeth, Amelia Earhart, Rosie the Riveter, astronaut Sally Ride and Julia Child, to mention a few. While in the Oklahoma City area, Jung will present Clara Barton to two Tulsa area schools: Sequoyah Middle School and a Jenks 8th grade class of 250 students. To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, National Red Cross Month in March, Women’s History Month in March and the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the Oklahoma History Center has highlighted women in history in its living history performances for February and March. February featured Katharine Pittman as Martha Washington, and Jung will portray Clara Barton in March.
