Spiro Mounds to Host Archaeology Day
SPIRO, Okla. — Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will hold its 14th annual Archaeology Day/Birthday Bash on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The site will celebrate its 41st year of increasing awareness of Oklahoma archaeology. As a bonus, Archaeology Day will be a free day with no entrance fees, although donations are gratefully accepted.
All day during the celebration, items will be given away by drawing and 41st birthday cake will be served. If you have artifacts, like arrowheads or pottery, an archaeologist will be on site to identify up to 10 items per person.
Flint knappers will show off their stone tool making skills. Blowgun, stickball and Chunkee demonstrations will be available upon request. Lectures on local history and prehistory will be featured during the day. There also will be a guided tour of the site at 2 p.m. led by manager Dennis Peterson. Of course, the regular exhibits will be available throughout the day as well. If you would like more information about Archaeology Day events or how you can help, please contact Dennis Peterson at 918-962-2062 or spiro@okhistory.org. The center is located three miles east of Spiro on Highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road.
