Archaeology Month, Spiro Mounds

October 15, 2016

Event Navigation

October is Archaeology Month! The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will hold a special day with a lecture and a guided walk on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

An archaeologist from the Oklahoma Archeological Survey will be available to identify artifacts in collections. There will also be a great flintknapper (stone tool maker) showing how to make arrowheads from stone. At 1 pm is a lecture about Spiro Mounds, and at 2 pm visitors can take a guided tour of the site led by manager Dennis Peterson. The exhibits will be available throughout the day as well. The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is the only prehistoric, Native American, archaeological site in Oklahoma open to the public and is the perfect place to celebrate Archaeology Month.

The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 am until 5 pm and Sunday from noon until 5 pm. Admission is $4 adults, $3 seniors, and $1 children. The Center is located three miles east of Spiro, Oklahoma, on highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road.

Archaeology Month is sponsored and promoted by the Oklahoma Anthropological Society; they offer multiple events throughout Oklahoma in October.
