The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center (SMAC) is pleased to announce a book signing event for the Arcadia Publishing title Spiro Mounds and WPA Archaeology in Oklahoma that will occur in conjunction with the 45th Anniversary and Reopening event taking place at the center on May 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. Dr. Scott Hammerstedt one of the authors, with the Oklahoma Archeological Survey will be in attendance to autograph the books.
The book, released on May 1, is a treasure trove of photography chronicling the early history of archaeological excavations at the Spiro site, both by looters and professional archaeologists alike. The book features photographs of the mounds undisturbed before any excavations occurred, as well as photos taken during excavations carried out by the Pocola Mining Company, the University of Oklahoma, and others. Readers can also find photographs of various artifacts found at Spiro in the book that provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, exploring the early excavation history of the Mounds.
Admission to the event is free and guests are welcome to explore the park and exhibits as well. The Center encourages anyone interested in the history of the Spiro Mounds to attend.
