This workshop will give hands-on training to identify photographs dating from 1859 to 1920 with a concentration on portraits. The workshop will look at methods for establishing date ranges by looking at fashions, backdrops, specific photographers, mounting thicknesses, mounting colors, and edge treatments for board stock–mounted photographs and tintype masks.
This program will be held on Friday, August 24, from 10:30 am to 4 pm in the Clark and Kay Musser Learning Lab. The Learning Lab is located on the first floor of the Oklahoma History Center, inside the Research Center. Lunch is on your own.
This class will be taught by Chester Cowen, the retired photograph archivist for the Oklahoma Historical Society. Cowen will bring examples for attendees to examine and attendees may also bring several photographs from their own collection to practice identification. This class size is limited and preregistration is required. Registration is $40 per person and includes materials prepared by the instructor. The deadline for registration is August 22. To register, please call the Oklahoma Historical Society Research Center at 405-522-5225.
