Event Navigation
Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will host its 13th annual Archaeology Day on Saturday, May 12, from 9 am to 5 pm. This event also will celebrate the site’s 40th year of increasing awareness of Oklahoma archaeology. The celebration will feature demonstrations, lectures, a guided tour of the site at 2 pm, prize drawings, and birthday cake! As a bonus, Archaeology Day is a free admission day, though donations are gratefully accepted.
Guests are invited to enjoy blowgun, stickball, and chunkey demonstrations as well as lectures about local history and prehistory. Flint knappers Dave and Raydele Klostermeier will be showcasing their stone tool-making skills. Attendees can bring artifacts, such as arrowheads or pottery, and an archaeologist will be available to help identify up to ten items per person. Do not miss the museum exhibits and a special guided tour of the site, which will be led by archaeologist and site manager Dennis Peterson. For more information about Archaeology Day events or to learn how you can help, please contact Dennis Peterson at 918-962-2062 or spiro@okhistory.org. Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is located three miles east of Spiro on Highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road.
