The Oklahoma Genealogical Society and the Oklahoma Historical Society will host “Discovering DNA Secrets,” a workshop explaining genetic genealogy, on October 11 and 12, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. Workshop instructors include two nationally recognized experts on genetic genealogy, Blaine Bettinger and Melissa A. Johnson.
Blaine Bettinger, Ph.D., J.D., is a professional genealogist specializing in DNA evidence. He is the author of the long-running blog The Genetic Genealogist, and frequently gives presentations and webinars to educate others about the use of DNA to explore their ancestry. He is the author of The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy, and co-author with Debbie Parker Wayne of the award-winning Genetic Genealogy in Practice, the world’s first genetic genealogy workbook. He also co-authored Genetics for Genealogy with Judy Russell in 2018’s Professional Genealogy: Preparation, Practice and Standards, edited by Elizabeth Shown Mills.
Melissa Johnson is a Certified Genealogist® with expertise in New Jersey research from the colonial period to the present day. She is on the faculty of the Boston University Genealogical Research Program, the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and the Institute for Genealogy and Historical Research. She has previously served on the faculty of the British Institute and the Forensic Genealogy Institute.
