Event Navigation
Fort Towson Historic Site will host “History Day Camp” for kids ages nine to 15 from Tuesday, May 30, through Thursday, June 1. The camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The three-day camp will center on the theme of “sensing the past.” Focuses will include history, archaeology, military drills, old-fashioned games, and crafts. The site’s staff and historical interpreters will encourage learning through experiences, sights, smells, tastes, and sounds that spark the imagination. During the camp, young people can explore the site with physical and experiential learning activities that will encourage them to learn what life was like in the 1840s.
Whether taking part in an 1840s baseball game, learning to roll a wooden barrel, surveying the landscape, surveying the topography or just enjoying the beauty of nature, this camp experience will encourage all types of learners to be curious about their surroundings. Some camp activities will take kids into the kitchen to experience the time-honored art of bread baking and enjoying their fresh-baked goods. Various crafts, art projects, card playing and videos during the lunch hour are also planned.
Registration is required. You can register by calling 580-236-0537 or visiting Fort Towson Historic Site. The camp fee will be $70 per child. Classes are limited to 30 participants. Fort Towson is partnering with the Choctaw and Pushmataha County 4-H and Oklahoma Ag Extension to host the 2023 History Day Camp.
The Fort Towson Historic Site is located at 896 W. 4375 Rd. in Fort Towson.
