Jesse Howard Discussion, Sod House

October 22, 2016, 10 a.m.11 a.m.

Event Navigation

The Sod House Museum will host an open discussion to gather historical information on African American rancher Jesse Howard on Saturday, October 22, at 10 am. Although Howard was an active force in the area, very few of his activities have been documented. Professor Jana Brown of Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) will be at the museum to collect and record information on Jesse Howard, the African American community known as Elm Flat located northwest of Cleo Springs, the English-Howard Rodeo and Round-Up at Cleo Springs, Jesse Howard’s days of horseracing and his days as a stock contractor raising Brahman bulls for surrounding rodeos.

The Sod House Museum is reaching out to the community to join in sharing bits of history or stories about Jesse Howard. During this roundtable discussion participants can share with one another bits of history and hopefully bring more stories to light to document and record for future generations. People many times feel that what they know or have heard is not important. However, it is often the little things of daily life that becomes important because those activities are seldom recorded. Please join the discussion and share the history and stories about Jesse Howard and the Elm Flat community.
