Ruth Shaw (Osage)

About the artist:

Ruth Shaw (Osage) has been sewing Osage ribbonwork for over thirty years. Self-taught, she refined her technique by taking classes from the late Chris Johnston, the late Davy Watts and the late Josephine Tillman.
She initially began sewing ribbonwork at an early age after her mother became ill with rheumatoid arthritis, and they could no longer complete sewing projects together. She has always drawn her inspiration from her mother.
During her career, Ruth has made many Osage ribbonwork suits, skirts, leggings, men’s and women’s broadcloth blankets and aprons. She was also commissioned to make a men’s ribbonwork suit for the current Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear.
