June 17, 2022, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Event Navigation
Students and faculty of the University of Oklahoma and staff of the Oklahoma Archeological Survey are performing a month of excavations at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center through June 17. Visitors are welcome to observe the research and ask questions at this unique learning experience.
Under the direction of Dr. Scott Hammerstedt, Dr. Amanda Regnier and Dr. Patrick Livingood, students will be excavating areas of interest from recent remote sensing projects. This is the first excavation at the site since 2014 and a great opportunity for students and visitors to see what real archaeologists do to understand the past. This experience is free with regular admission, and members of the Oklahoma Historical Society, Spiro Mounds Development Association, and active military and veterans with ID cards get free admission.
Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is the only pre-European contact site in Oklahoma open to visitors. The interpretive center and trails regularly are open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. The center is located three miles east of Spiro on Highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road. For further information about the center, please call 918-962-2062.
