OU Archaeological Field School at Spiro Mounds begins
May 12
Event Navigation
From Monday, May 12, through Friday, June 13, the University of Oklahoma students and faculty will perform a month of excavations at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. Visitors are welcome to observe the research and ask questions while the group works.
Students from the University of Oklahoma will excavate areas of interest at the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, the only pre-European contact site in Oklahoma. Visitors will have the opportunity to closely observe live archaeological fieldwork.
While the field school is not open to volunteers, visitors may observe excavations and ask questions from designated areas along the trails. To protect the work of the archaeologists, visitors are asked to remain behind any barriers at all times. The excavations will not always coincide with Spiro Mounds’ business hours, so visitors are encouraged to call ahead with any questions they may have about seeing the excavations.
Admission to the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is currently free of charge while the visitor’s center undergoes construction. The interpretive center and trails regularly are open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
The center is located three miles east of Spiro on Highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road. For further information about the center, please call 918-962-2062.
