“Rodeo Cowgirls and Rural Feminism” Public Lecture by Tracey Hanshew

Until recently, scholars have employed a distinctly political and urban definition of feminism that largely ignores rural women. Tracey Hanshew’s presentation will explore the issue of feminism in the rural American West with special attention to cowgirls as they traveled the rodeo circuit and competed in the masculine sport of rodeo. Join us for this provocative discussion that examines rodeo cowgirls in the early 20th century.

Tracey Hanshew is a doctoral teaching associate and PhD student of history at Oklahoma State University. Her major is American West, with a minor in modern European history. Her research focus is on women in the American West, with emphasis on rodeo cowgirls.
