The Will Rogers Memorial Museum has teamed up with the Boy Scouts of America to bring the Pinewood Derby to Wild West Kid’s Camp. The camp, a family favorite at the museum, runs Monday, June 17 through Wednesday, June 19. Over 150 children ages 5-12 will spend their morning at the museum and experience stagecoach rides, nature talks, stickball, Cherokee storytelling, and, this year, the Pinewood Derby. Will’s Wild West Kid’s Camp has been so popular that slots were full before the registration deadline!
The derby will take place on Tuesday, June 18. Campers will race wooden cars on a gravity-driven track. This is an annual event for Cub Scouts. Scouts build cars and learn STEM principles like mechanics, physics and engineering.
“Will Rogers District at Indian Nations Council would like to have all kids experience the Pinewood Derby which is the most popular event in Scouting. Every year more than a million boys and parents team up to carve, decorate, weigh, adjust, fret over, and finally race a Pinewood Derby car,” said Rose Damilao-Miles, with the Boy Scouts.
“Kids camp is so much fun and having the excitement of the Pinewood Derby will really add to the experience for the campers,” said Will Rogers Memorial Museum Executive Director, Tad Jones.
This is the 10th year for Will’s Wild West Kids Camp. It has become one of the Museum’s most popular events, selling out yearly.
Will’s Wild West Kids Camp is sponsored by generous donations from the Moore Family Foundation, Kay Ingersoll and the OK State Society Daughters of the American Colonists.
