The Fort Gibson Historic Site will celebrate winter traditions and cheer in a series of December living history programs. The programs will take place on December 19–21 from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 4 p.m.
Winter on the edge of Indian Territory was spent in regular military duties such as guard, mess hall, and drill, but they were also able to add a bit of pizazz into their days with small decorations- especially if they were lucky enough to have family close by. Work in the kitchens was made more festive with a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, and liberal doses of preservatives in the form of brandy and the like. At Fort Gibson Historic Site, we will finish out the year decorating the palisade and decorating gingerbread cookies fresh from the 1860s oven!
