Battle of Honey Springs Memorial Event (virtual)
On Saturday, July 18, at 10:30 a.m. the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) and the Friends of Honey Springs Battlefield will host the annual memorial event commemorating the Battle of Honey Springs. The Oklahoma Historical Society will host an online workshop to inform the public about the application process for the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program on Wednesday, August 12, at 11 a.m. This virtual workshop will provide guidance for groups interested in applying for this grants-in-aid program, which sets aside $500,000 to award grants ranging from $500 to $20,000 to municipal, county, or tribal governments and not-for-profit historical organizations, as well as the support groups for these entities. On Saturday, August 15, starting at 7:30 a.m., aviation enthusiasts will mark 85 years to the day since Will Rogers and Wiley Post died in an Alaska plane crash. To honor their memory, pilots of over 125 small planes will land on a 2,000-foot grass strip at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch, adjacent to the house where Rogers was born in 1879. A National Day of Remembrance will be held as a Facebook Live event at 10 a.m. on the same day as the Will Rogers and Wiley Post Fly-In. This ceremony will mark the tragic loss of the lives of Will Rogers and Wiley Post. The service will also honor all those who have lost their lives in a small airplane crash. Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch will host Family Day at the Ranch on Saturday, September 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. Through hands-on activities and demonstrations, visitors will get a glimpse of what life was like in the early days of the ranch during Will Rogers’s childhood! Demonstrations and activities include butter churning, using a washboard, and rope making. Family Day at the Ranch is free and open to the public, and donations are appreciated.
