French explorer Jean Baptiste Bénard de La Harpe is credited with the first written account about the discovery of coal in present Oklahoma in 1719. The coal outcroppings in southeastern Oklahoma, however, would have been known and used by Plains Indians for hundreds of years before La Harpe's account.
