CARTER, JOSEPH CHRIS (1960– ).
Born in Oklahoma City on March 7, 1960, Joe Carter was the eighth of eleven children born to Joseph and Athelene Carter. After graduating from Millwood High School in 1978, Joe Carter played college baseball at Wichita State University. Named the Sporting News magazine's College Player of the Year in 1981, that same year he was the Chicago Cub's first draft choice. He played with the Cubs before being traded to the Cleveland Indians in June 1984. In sixteen seasons with the Cubs, Indians, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants, he hit 396 home runs, ranking thirtieth on the all-time list.
Carter played in more than two thousand major league games. In his last September he batted a spectacular .300, with several game-winning hits for the Giants. He is best remembered for hitting a towering home run in the ninth inning of the final game of the 1993 World Series, giving his Toronto Blue Jays a second consecutive world championship. Married with four children, Joe Carter retired after the 1998 season.
