Submitted by Betty J. (McGibbon) Dutcher

The correct name is William M. McGibbon; born Jan. 12, 1847, in NY; died Dec. 18, 1921, in New York. In the mid 1870s the family went west to Smith County, Kansas. In 1893 he made the Oklahoma Cherokee Outlet land run, built a sod house and brought his family to Oklahoma Territory. In 1894 he petitioned for and was granted a post office. He was postmaster for 15 years, starting in the sod house, a picture of which hangs in the post office department in Washington, DC. McGibbon and his sons operated The Gibbon Trading Company. All the years he had fathered Gibbon, watching with a father's pride, declaring it a fulfillment of his dream.
In 1919, his wife, Jane, died. Mr. McGibbon died Dec. 18, 1921, and both are buried in the Gibbon Cemetery.
