W. H. McAnally

Submitted by Shirle Lamb Williams

William H. McAnally (1847-1918) came from Alabama to the Fort Gibson area of Indian Territory after the Civil War and married Sallie Hensley, a Cherokee Indian, when she was just 15. They ran a rooming house in McAlester before moving to Wagonor Switch and building a small hotel when it was nothing but a railroad crossing. The McAnallys were the first permanent residents of what was to become the town of Wagoner. They had nine children but only three survived. Sallie is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner and William is buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery. He was a Civil War veteran.
