I. W. Lane

I. W. Lane (1865-1953) was an owner of a dry goods store in Talladega, AL, until racial tension sent the family, his wife, Mary, and five little kids packing by night to Red Bird, OK. In Oklahoma he owned a cotton gin and the Lane Construction Co. In 1939 Mr. Lane, with the help of the NAACP, sued three counties regarding voter rights for blacks in OK and took the case all the way to the Supreme Court (Lane vs Wilson). A sign at the entrance of the city reads "Home of Statesman I. W. Lane" He is also the grandfather of a distinguished Tuskegee Airman, Lt. Earl L. Lane.
