Rev. Andres "Andele" Martinez

Submitted by Janet Stapleton Todd

When he was 10, Andres Martinez was captured by Apaches near his home in New Mexico and sold to the Kiowa chief Many Bears, who raised him as his grandson. Andres became a Kiowa brave living in Oklahoma. He later returned to his family in New Mexico, and then returned to the Kiowas to teach industrial arts at the agency school and serve as a Methodist missionary to the tribe. He was a member of the Oklahoma Historical Society. J. J. Methvin wrote a book about him entitled, Andele, The Mexican-Kiowa Captive. A Story of Real Life Among the Indians.
