Ken grew up on a farm near Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, and earned degrees from Messiah College and Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania and from the University of Oklahoma. He taught students across the spectrum from elementary school to graduate school and was a school principal in Kansas. For 4 years he taught at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and for 29 years at Oklahoma State University. He and his wife, Lois, had a daughter, Janelle, and a son, Aaron. In retirement he works with the Ministry of Education in Belize and is President of the Aaron K. Stern Foundation which funds Aaron's Camp. He has been a member of the Oklahoma Historical Society for many years.
