The Harden Collection was accessed while in the custody of the Harden Family by author Bob Burke during the research for his book on John J. Harden. Some sections of the papers were sleeved in plastic and placed in binders based on correspondent or subject. These designations were taken into consideration upon processing of the collection.
Burke's notes and other various evidence of his research was also found and culled together into one file.

Oklahoma Water Projects correspondence includes letters supporting the construction of sewers in newly formed neighborhoods, including letters from outside contractors and Harden himself to the major and city council. Also included is correspondence relating to the implementation of the Oklahoma Irrigation Project and purchasing of city improvement bonds as well as general management of related projects, such as Oklahoma City Flood Control Project and the use of "Trammell Pipes" to achieve these means. Notable correspondents include Horace A. Sears, Hugh M. Johnson and J.D. Trammell.
Oklahoma City Gas Franchise correspondence relates to the establishment and financing of the Gas Distribution plant. Most of the correspondence is between John J. Harden and J.G. Pundt on contracts and financing of the said project. Also included in the correspondence is Carl Magee's all out assault on Pundt and Harden in the newspaper, resolutions and contracts granting building rights. Notable correspondents include Jesse H. The Reconstruction Finance Committee (RFC) dealt with a great many issues, but these next few boxes deal specifically with War time Depletion Percentages/Tax Breaks for states that produce many of the coveted and limited natural resources needed for war time operations. Correspondence deals mainly with Senator Elmer Thomas, currying favor for road projects under the Works Projects Act (WPA) for projects involving the paving of state parks in Oklahoma. Notable correspondence includes Jesse H. Jones, director of the RFC, requesting additional monies for projects, Congressman Will Rogers, Stanley Draper, WE Disney and Walter Harrison soliciting favor in awarding government contracts under HB 4606, which included the Unemployment Act, Public Works Construction Bill, etc. Harden solicited many senators and congressmen from other states, not just Oklahoma in his endeavors to obtain many paving contracts for the numerous state parks located here.

Administrative Information
Lea Mex Development dealt mainly with developing the New Hobbs Town Site. John J. Harden believed New Hobbs was going to be the epicenter of the oil and gas industry, and with that idea in mind proceeded to build the luxurious Harden Hotel. Included in this box are many items dealing with real estate development, such as contracts, quit claim deeds and mortgages.
