The United States of America's highest military honor, awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. There are three versions of the medal, one for the Army, one for the Navy, and one for the Air Force. Personnel of the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard receive the Navy version.
An award given to distinguished individuals for their service to veterans; supporting community activities that strengthen the quality of life for members of that community and for citizenship setting the example for other citizens bringing credit to the uniform services. The award may be given to an individual that may not have served in the armed forces of the United States. This individual selection is not based upon valor as is the other selects.
